Went to see The Hobbit 3 for the second time now. I now understand why its so mind-numbingly dull film: its 3 hours long, and has only one scene thats being repeated over and over again. Every character moment and every bit of dialogue follows the exactly same structure: 1. CALL TO ACTION - Something the viewer expects to happen is introduced: Thorin, you must make peace with them. 2. REFUSAL AND CONTRADICTING ACTION - The character refuses to act according to common sense because of his inner ideology, but instead does the exactly contradicting action, which the viewer cant expect (although once you learn the pacing, this is exactly what the viewer is expecting to happen): I will not make peace with them. I will go to war with them! 3. SURPRISE ELEMENT - A surprise element that saves the situation and throws it into a completely new tangent where a collaboration between the parties of 1 and 2 are required: Thorin, the Orcs are attacking. This happens all through the film, in exactly this form, and even if you dont really pay attention to the structure, the film hammers it in your head in the first 45 minutes, and the last 2+ hours you feel constantly duller, dumber and more bored because the same repeats over and over again.
