Went to some back lakes this morning with intentions of sight-casting reds. I knew the outgoing tide would be a mere trickle but Ive got to go when I can. Water was glass and off-color, andwas running about a foot below normal (I knew it was going to be a grind). Winds were west 5-10mph. I started off at my new favorite little drain. Like clockwork the mullet raft squirted out of the drain as the sun came up. To greet them were reds and flounder; I picked off one red about 25 and a nice flounder from the flurry. After the action slowed I went looking for moving water; found some decent water in a bayou that connects two lakes. While working the current breaks I picked up three nice flounder. Dragging the stringer behind me I went into back lake number two. Found some bull reds chasing shrimp along a shoreline under birds. I picked off a 31 and a 30 out of the pod. The 31 red weighed 13# on the boga, and swam away strong once released. The 30 red swallowed the hook pretty bad so I used my tag and strung it. Caught a 16 trout (that I released) to complete the slam. Everything was caught on the same 3 sugar and spice gulp shrimp on a 1/8oz bass assassin jig-head, and Lews speed spool on a Lews 365 speed stick. This rod and reel combo is bullet proof. Light enough to cast accurately, strong enough to set the hook consistently on large flounder and wench in oversized reds.
