Went to the Last Mic Standing contest at the Fountains of Farah shopping center this evening to watch and support my old friend and partner in crime, Phfilmer Flungbucket. I also wanted to see how the logistics were handled and how the sound system sounded as I was considering entering the contest with my bass player, Ron Guthrie, who was also there. Im not sure I know how to say this nicely. The sound mix was awful. Not just for Phfilmer but for all the performers. Not much you can do when you have 10 thousand dollars worth of sound equipment and a 10 cent wannabe engineer. Also, if youre going to have several bands, have everybody come early and have all the bands equipment (drums, amps and instruments) already set up and ready to go. Having people setting up and tearing down equipment while someone else is performing is distracting and unprofessional. Come on Fountains of Farah. You can do better than that! Rise above the mediocrity that is so prevalent in El Paso. There is a lot of really great talent here and they deserve better. That being said, congratulations to the young lady who won, Vianey (I never could catch her last name)! Outstanding performance of Etta James At Last!
