Went to the Podiatrist yesterday. It was a good news/better - TopicsExpress

Went to the Podiatrist yesterday. It was a good news/better news/best news situation: good news - the trouble with my foot has been diagnosed, better news - it is treatable WITHOUT making me stop running, best news - if the proposed treatments dont work, there is a surgical intervention that is guaranteed to work! Well try the non- surgical interventions first. I have to drop my mileage down to 3 miles a day for a month, but can still run. Ill supplement the running by putting my bike on an indoor practice stand and biking an hour or so a day. He recommended a different shoe than what Im running in, and told me to throw my minimals, sandals, and high heels in the trash. Well go back in a month and see what kind of progress Ive made. If things are better, hes going to ok my planned half marathon in June, and let me register for a marathon in the fall. Heres an interesting little factoid: While he was examining my foot, I got kind of teary, begging him NOT to make me quit running. Running is my anti-depressant, it gives me energy and enthusiasm and keeps me centered. The Doctor, quite an athlete himself (hes ridden the Leadville 100 mile bike race TWICE), told me that he very rarely gives that order. He said that 80% of all people who take antidepressant medications could have those medications totally discontinued without adverse effects, if they would just engage in some form of exercise regularly! 80%!!!! Thats phenomenal! So when I referred to my daily runs as my antidepressant medication, it was a literal truth.
