Went to the dentist today for an extraction. That means to have a tooth pulled. I was in the chair for an hour and forty-five minutes. He gave me a couple shots, walked away for about five minutes, and somewhere around half-way through he walked away for about ten minutes. The rest of the time he was fighting to get that thing out of my jaw. Now this aint no beginner, and he aint working at one of them generic franchise places. In fact last year he served as president of the Georgia Dental Association, for the most part he knows what he is doing. Said that it may have been about the most difficult extraction he has ever done. He pushed and he pulled and he struggled- four or five times he stopped, sighed and reached for the drill, drilled it out so he could break it and take it out in pieces. He would get to pushing and twisting and I could hear the tooth snapping and cracking and a sound that was like flesh and tendon being ripped away from bone, and a couple of times it was like something slipped and all these tiny fragments of bone would fly out of my mouth where something had just shattered. He had bullets of sweat on his forehead, his poor assistant, she was looking a little queasy and turning pale. My jaw got so tired he had to put a plastic wedge in my mouth to keep it opened. He finally got it all out. He put three stitches in it and it still took a while to stop the bleeding. I told my mom that she would have been proud of me, that I only dozed off twice the whole time. This was the first time in a while that I felt like I got my moneys worth from a dental appointment. Oh Yeah- the funny thing- they was giving me instructions on how to care for it the first 24 hours, they said not to smoke. Hell, dont smoke for 24 hours? I almost had him stop the procedure so I could grab a smoke. Stressful as that was, mother Teresa would need a smoke after that! Just writing this and I need one- later. -Big D
