Were almost no school closings back when we were kids? It - TopicsExpress

Were almost no school closings back when we were kids? It depends. There were many years in which Fremont got off pretty light. Feb. 1983, Jan. 1994 and Jan. 1999 were heavy snow day times from what I remember while living in Fremont. To push the records farther back, as part of 1970s decade in review piece, The News-Messenger printed a list of school closing dates to help illustrate weather conditions of those years. The article I saw must have been hard to read as I retyped it for my family records, but I found that copy quickly enough. Here are the dates and notes that Fremont Board of Education provided to the paper: Jan. 9, 1970: Snow day. Feb. 22, 1971: Ice day. Dec. 12, 1972: bad weather. Jan. 25, 1973: National day of mourning for former President L.B. Johnson. Feb. 16, 1973: Snow day. Jan. 9, 10, 11, 1974: Ice, snow, freezing rain. Feb. 11, 1974: Drifting snow. Dec. 2, 3, 4, 1974: 12 to 15 inches of snow. (Paulas notes - this was part of a memorable lake effect system that caused havoc in NW Ohio and SE Michigan). Jan. 10, 11, 18, 27, 28, 1977: Snow and road conditions caused by drifting snow. (Paula notes: Jan. 27 and 28 were the Blizzard of 1977, which we might still be talking about today except for the blizzard that hit a year later). Feb, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1977: All buildings were closed due to the energy crisis, shortage of heating fuel. Feb. 7, 8, 1977: Elementary schools and the junior high school closed due to energy related requests. March 22, 1977: Drifting snow. Dec. 5, 6, 7, 9, 1977: Snow. Jan. 10, 1978: Snow. Jan. 18, 20, 1978: Snow. Jan. 26, 27, 30, 1978: Snow. (Paulas notes: This was the legendary Great Blizzard of 78. Travel in Fremont and elsewhere northwest Ohio was paralyzed for nearly four days. The city could not get accurate snowfall records from that storm because the blowing and drifting was so severe, and if i recall correctly the snowpiles at Potter Village parking lot didnt melt until May.) Feb. 26, 1979: Snow. So there you have it: When I was in grade school in the 1970s, Fremont City Schools really DID close for cold, blizzards, lack of heat, and even a random reason. I dont have accurate records for 1983 but I was in high school then and remember a lot of delays and closings; and I remember dealing with the deep freeze of 1994 and blizzard / Level 3 / Level 2 conditions of Jan. 1999 both a parent and a reporter at N-M and its sister paper.
