Were big fans of Danny Macaskill here at DooFeR, and todays AdLab certainly doesnt disappoint... Beautifully shot with plenty of bonkers bike-riding to boot filmgood.sm/en/danny-macaskill-the-ridge/ Directed by Stu Thomson (Cut Media, Glasgow) Photography by Scott Marshall and Stu Thomson With more than ten million views on YouTube in less than a week, The Ridge depicts the exploits of 28-year-old professional cyclist Danny MacAskill, along Cuillin Ridge on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. The craggy and awe-inspiring terrain stretches over eleven kilometers and reaches 992 metres at its peak. Sponsored by Enve Composites and Five Ten (with Santa Cruz Bikes and Red Bull logos appearing intermittently), the film is dreamy, spectacular and breathtaking. Shot with multi-cameras, including helmet-cam and drone, it tells of an arduous endeavour never before attempted. Without in any way diminishing MacAskill’s immeasurable skill and the film crew’s passionate commitment – every day they would carry on foot food, water and camera equipment – the film employs a storytelling licence that damages its conceptual integrity. The few, and perhaps unnecessary, shots from the ground create a disconsonance, as they indicate the presence of a film crew along the route that MacAskill is taking, theoretically for the first time. “I’ve always wondered whether it would be possible to ride my mountain-bike up there.” The complexity of camera tracking, reverse angles and camera positions where the crew wait for MacAskill to enter frame, would have required prep time, rehearsals and repeated takes. So the film is no longer a documentary about an awesome challenge but rather a piece of spectacular filmmaking. It would have been both had it been shot exclusively with helmet-cam and drone. https://youtube/watch?v=xQ_IQS3VKjA
