Were delighted to share that Bella is continuing to thrive in her new home! Formerly neglected dogs require significant time to adjust--everything is literally new to her. Shes just now starting to feel comfortable going outside (her parents had to pick her up and carry her out initially). Shes beginning to play. Shes reciprocating love. But shes still very, very hungry as a result of coming to us starving. A potentially life-threating situation happened last night. Bella found an innocuous object--a pair of lounging pants, and in a matter of minutes, eat a large portion of them. It can be hard to understand HOW a dog could be so hungry that sleepwear could look appealing. Were sharing this because its important to understand the state of survival mode this dog is in, as a result of formerly being starved, even as she receives food throughout the day. Its that mental and physical transition that her parents will have to cope with for some time. Thankfully Bellas parents are highly diligent and attentive and didnt hesitate to rush her to Michigan State Universitys ER. They are always mindful to where she is, and what shes up to if shes not right next to them. Its that degree of attention that allowed Bella to check OUT of the ER last night without surgery. Actually, running up and down the hallways like she owned the place, as if nothing had happened! Had they delayed getting to the vet--(and it was 11pm at night), she would have had a serious, life threatening obstruction. Because they got to the ER quick, vomiting was induced and the vets feel that they got the majority, if not all, of the pants removed. Naturally shell continue to be monitored closely. So far she is doing good! And the house has been FURTHER baby proofed to mitigate a future accident. This is a THANK YOU to Bellas parents, Andrew and Krysten, who we dearly appreciate for being so dedicated to her recovery despite the somewhat unavoidable bumps along the way. When many people would give up, they are forging ahead with love.
