Were delighted with the response to the first of our regular build-up painting course and wish to thank all who continue to join us on this Wet on Wet Watercolour course - Lesson 5 is now released on #artworkshopwithpaul via #vimeo; which will be followed by Lesson 6 within the next ten days and then a break for resolving any problems posted for Paul to resolve in our FB group Art Workshop With Paul Taggart Painting Companions (if you would like to be a member please apply using the link posted in the accompanying Comment below). Learn to Enjoy Painting in Watercolours with Paul Taggart - [Series 2] – Lesson 5 To keep the overall composition balanced there are two aspects that now need attention – firstly, the tree on the left hand side; secondly the arc of land that frames the left hand side of the view and sweeps through to the middle distance. Although these are not the focus of attention in this particular painting, they are, as Paul explains, essential elements; as they ‘frame’ the body of water of this lake, known as Loch Brora. This is where the Wet on Wet Technique comes into its own – for THE TREE needs to be strong and dense in character, but softly focused in nature. The first section of this episode is a mini tutorial in its own right – you will learn so much about how to control wet-on-wet, how to mix the correct consistency of paint mixes, how to load your brush, how to control your wet-on-wet brush-strokes, how to judge the right colour mixes, how to avoid back-runs, how to work in smaller sections at a time – literally a myriad professional hints, tips and techniques packed into painting this tree. If all you get out of this episode is the confidence with which to work wet-on-wet, then Paul’s job is done. But that is not where Paul’s work finishes – for there is a wealth of information in this episode alone. As you work on this layer you will find your composition becomes more defined; even though you are working purely in wet-on-wet; as the mid-values of your painting are established. You will now fully appreciate the importance of working in layers from light to dark. You will now begin to grasp the beauty of the Wet on Wet Technique. Close-up shots not only reveal Paul’s brush-work and let you see how colours are mixed; but MOST IMPORTANTLY you will also see the effects of wetting the surface, the effects of wetting up to an already wetted area, how unexpected runs can be corrected – as with all of Paul’s tutorials, you are shown how to overcome any difficulties, for he wishes to reassure you that whatever technique you are using in watercolours, it is a forgiving medium. For the ARC OF LAND Paul first of all turns to masking fluid to effect texture and selective spots of focus; before moving on with the second layer of paint. Watch as seemingly ‘abstract’ paint strokes suggest detail, light and shade. Watch as powerful and dynamic colour mixes applied to the land play their part in bringing the water to life – it positively sings out against these brightly contrasted areas – proving how important it is to gradually build up layers on a painting; to ensure a balanced emergence of the overall composition. Once satisfied with the overall balance of these two sections, Paul now removes the masking fluid. THE FINAL SECTION of this episode is another mini tutorial – as Paul DEMONSTRATES THE ‘ART’ OF LIFT-OFF – which is about so much more than merely lifting off colour. Watch as selective lift-off suggests volume and depth, light and shade, texture and effects, defined shapes and suggestive forms. Listen as Paul speaks of how lift-off is as important as the application of paint. Watch as he ‘reveals’ previously laid colour and introduces the softest of new elements, such as leaves that have not been painted thus far. This is an excitingly revealing episode, in every sense of the word and one not to be missed.
