Were excited to see the Street Books project featured in the New York Times! They use a cargo bike to deliver books to people living on the streets of Portland. Our Ruff Riders project uses a cargo bike to deliver pet supplies to people in under-served neighborhoods of Brooklyn. The cargo bike has been an effective tool for connecting with our community (were hard to miss!) and for overcoming the logistical barriers of hauling large deliveries without a car (e.g., pet food bags, dog crates, kitty litter). The Ruff Riders cargo bike is also a visual symbol that Brooklyn loves their pets, and we love our community and our pet owners. This is a great quote from the NYT article: Taking books to the streets, Ms. Rempe said, sends the message that poor and marginalized people are not so different from the “us” that defines the educated, literate mainstream of the city, whether in its hipsters, computer geeks or bankers.
