Were home from UAB again. Seems like weve been there a lot lately. Carla had her kidney stents replaced at Brookwood a couple of weeks ago but after the latest e-coli infection, they decided to replace them again. There was discussion amongst the oncologists, the disease control doctors and the urologists about them being the source of the secondary infection. Some of them wanted the stents removed and replaced, others didnt. Were not sure who the deciding vote was but they opted to have them removed and replaced again. Since doctor Austin retired and there was no other reason to go back to Brookwood, we decided to have it done at UAB this time. Now, in the future, ALL of her medical issues will be in one system. After they took Carla back for surgery, I went downstairs to have some grits (I love the grits at UAB--what can I say). Anyway, I saw Dr. Austin on the way there. It had been a while since Id seen him and even though he spoke first, I still told him who I was. He immediately said he KNEW who I was and he asked about Carla by name. He walked along with me and asked me about why I was there. I told him that Carla had recently fought off an infection. Ever the doctor (even if hes retired) he wanted to know all that was going on. After I told him, he agreed with what was being done. While I was sitting in the surgery waiting room, Dr. Leath (her current oncologist) was there to see a family after doing surgery. He saw me and came over to speak and he also asked about Carla. It is wonderful to know that we have doctors who know and recognize us and dont just consider us as case numbers. BTW, I asked Dr. Austin how he like being retired. He sort of smiled and said he was adjusting. He is still working with some consults and also doing fundraising for UAB. I parted with him at the cafeteria and he continued on towards the GYN Oncology group. Weve been told hes still there most days. I guess you can take the Oncologist out of the practice but you cant take the practice out of the oncologist. Carla is sleeping now, I think Ill join her.
