Were hooked. . . There is not enough time here to discuss all the history of Garretts Creek Chub Bait Company. This iconic company was a favorite among Hollywood celebrities, politicians and royalty around the world, producing millions of fishing lures during its time in operation that are now collectible items. The original company was founded by Henry Dills who worked for the B&O Railroad in the cinder pits. Henry was dubbed sort of an odd duck locally (genius is often mis-understood) would sit next to his bathtub and study the movements and floatation elements of items in water. He would do the same in the cinder pits at the B&O yards, and would ride his bicycle to Indian Lake, Bixler Lake and Sylvan Lake to test his devices returning with lots of fish as a result. Fellow cinder pit members, and eventual co-owners of Creek Chub: (G.M. Schulthess-later Mayor of Garrett, and C. H. Heinzerling- hardware and sporting goods merchant), would launch the company that initially made hand painted lures in the early years of the business. The original operations of Creek Chub was located where the Garrett Post Office is located today, and moved to their last site at 101 East Keyser by 1918. Creek Chub was formally established in 1916, and descendants of the Dills Family have stated the founding date cited locally as 1906 is incorrect. They have documentation that firmly establishes Creek Chubs founding as the later date. Creek Chub Bait Company grew so much another business was created called Lures Inc. to meet demand following World War II. That plat was constructed in Ashley. Both Creek Chub structures have been razed with the original Garrett location becoming a small parking. A disappointing end to the home of one of Garrett and DeKalb Countys most prolific entrepreneurial ventures in our history. Check out the four images here concerning the Creek Chub Co we posted here. That wraps it up for us this week. Think we will go fishing.
