Were still paying off the $850 million we borrowed to build the Convention Center. The promises made then about new hotel room revenue never happened. The Convention Center Authority loses more and more money every year, $543 million in losses since it opened in 2004. Now we throw another billion dollars at a dying industry. More convention space doesn’t make our winters more attractive, it doesn’t change our second highest tourist tax burden in the nation, and it doesn’t change our location on the map compared to other centrally located, more travel convenient cities. The Governor held back $100 million due our cities and towns to repair local roads and bridges because he said we couldn’t afford it, but this billion dollar boondoggle got his signature. Instead of spending a billion dollars to shift economic promises from one region of the country to another, we should use our limited public dollars to invest in more innovative and lasting industries unique to the area that would have a much more lasting and stable impact on the Massachusetts economy!
