Werewolf of London 1935 - I had no idea this movie even existed until this weekend. Wolf of London is touted as the first mainstream werewolf movie, and even predates Universals more famous, The Wolfman. Its gone on to inspire songs, remakes, and video games, but I had never experienced it till today. The story focuses on a British botanist who gets bitten by a lycanthrope in Tibet and is trying to use a rare flower as a cure. On the plus side, I really like the look of the werewolf here - even more so than its updated Lon Cheney Jr. Version at times. Ill also say it gets points for being an unusual but interesting story filled with interesting sequences (the Tibet adventure is cool, a later exhibition about carnivorous plants is a show stealer, and some hilarious old ladies make for a good sequence later). But thats about where my praise ends. It is VERY disjointed. It feels like they took a script for Jekyll and Hyde and just pasted random new things in as replacements (ie, replace Hyde with werewolf, replace chemistry with botany, etc). The end result is something that feels nothing like Frankenstein or Dracula, but feels EVERYTHING like a forgettable 1950s scifi B movie. If curiosity for this one peaks your interest, then give it a go (and there IS a live camel in it, along with a frog getting eaten by a monster plant with vine tentacles, so its not like its unwatchable). If not, dont bother with it unless it has An American in the beginning of the title.
