West Chester police officers in collaboration with Liberty township police are making a point to visit every Lakota school over the next few weeks to provide students with the ALICE strategies. ALICE, which stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate, mentally prepares students and staff to address an active shooter event at their school. Students in grades K-12 are participating in age-appropriate presentations led by their school’s assigned School Resource Officers. For the younger students, the concept is incorporated into the “Stranger Danger” lesson, which teaches kids how to identify and protect themselves from strangers. For the first time, West Chester police are using a new video, featuring their “Safety Pup” mascot. The program is designed to build from year to year, each time introducing more tactical ways students can help manage the situation.
