West Mesquite Ends Royse City Season 50-10 By Bobby Summers Royse City- The West Mesquite Wranglers averaged 50 points per game this season. They kept that average alive and well as they dealt the Royse City Bulldogs a 50-10 season ending defeat at Royse City ISD Stadium last Friday night. It was Senior Parent night in Royse City and 78 seniors from various extra curricular school activities were honored prior to the Bulldogs final game of the season against the 8-2 West Mesquite Wranglers. West Mesquites only two losses came from District 12-5A counterparts Rockwall Heath and Mesquite Poteet. Poteet won the District Championship with their 42-35 victory over the Terrell Tigers last Friday. Heath came in second place while West Mesquite and Terrell rounded out the playoff bound representatives of the district. The Bulldogs did not go down easy even though the score is indicative of a lopsided victory. Royse City actually led early in the game as they opened the game going 51 yards in nine plays to score on a 32 yard field goal by senior kicker Preston Browning. A fake punt on fourth and one at the Wrangler 49 yard line gave the Bulldogs a first down. And then the trickery of one of the oldest plays in the book set up the successful field goal. The Old Fumble-Roosky worked to perfection as Aaron Landers rambled to the West Mesquite 18 yard line. With 8:03 to play in the first stanza the Bulldogs led 3-0. The lead did not last long as the Wranglers took only three plays to score on a 45 yard touchdown pass reception by Aikilian Butler from quarterback Chason Virgil. The extra point was good by Adolpho Rios for a 7-3 lead with 7:18 to play in the first quarter. Approximately three minutes later the Wranglers scored again on an 8 yard touchdown pass from Virgil to Butler. Rios kicked the extra point for a 14-3 lead. The Bulldogs came roaring back going 71 yards in 12 plays to score on a one yard touchdown plunge by junior quarterback Courtland Vance. Browning booted the point after and the Bulldogs were trailing 14-10 on the first play of the second quarter. Royse City stopped a long gainer by West Mesquite when the Wranglers broke loose on a 54 yard gain to the end-zone, but the ball was fumbled and the Bulldogs recovered in then end-zone to stall the powerful West Mesquite offense. The Wranglers would end the first half with a one yard touchdown run by Rashad Rayford. Rios extra point gave West Mesquite a sizable, but not insurmountable 21-10 halftime lead. The second half was all West Mesquite however as the Wranglers scored on a six yard touchdown run by LeBillie Hunter, a 35 yard touchdown pass from Virgil to Kris Watson and a 24 yard touchdown run by Rayford. All three touchdowns came in the third quarter to take the Bulldogs out of the game. Also adding to the Bulldogs misery were 11 penalties in the game with several being of the 15 yard variety. Royse Citys drives were halted because of the penalties and forced the Bulldogs to punt nine times in the contest. Add to these downfalls, the fact that Royse City lost their starting quarterback Courtland Vance to an injury at the end of the first half. The final touchdown by the Wranglers came on a 31 yard touchdown run by D.J. Jackson with 5:21 to play in the final quarter. A busted play on the extra point kick gave the Wranglers the chance to score a two point conversion to end the game and the season for the Bulldogs. Royse City expected a much improved season in 2014, but karma, a loss of 51 seniors and a very young and inexperienced football team could only squeeze out a 2-8 2014 season. The Bulldogs were certainly in the running for a much better season record, but losing three games late in the fourth quarter spelled the difference in a possible 5-5 campaign. The Bulldogs will lose some very talented seniors this season, but they return a plethora of younger talent that could make 2015 a very successful season. Also all grade levels from seventh grade through junior varsity had successful seasons and that is a signal that Bulldog Football will be back on top quickly and for an extended period of time.
