West Monroe showed many characteristics of a potential - TopicsExpress

West Monroe showed many characteristics of a potential championship team on Friday with speed, strength and hard hitting defense. But perhaps the biggest was heart. The ninth-seeded Rebels overcame a 14-0 deficit and ran past No. 24 Sam Houston 49-21 Friday at Don Shows Field at Rebel Stadium. Freshman quarterback Slade bolden rushed for 85 yards and three touchdowns and senior running back Devonte Williams added 103 yards and two scores. GOOD PLAY: West Monroe sophomore quarterback Robert Scott Foust got the Rebel offense on the scoreboard when he found senior wide receiver Nick Sanders for a 47-yard touchdown pass with 1:48 to go in the second quarter. With the Rebels going to the air more often in the first half, Foust completed 4-of-11 for 62 yards and one score. Freshman quarterback Slade Bolden completed 1-of-1 for 20 yards before the break. Foust finished with 93 yards on 6-of 16 passing unofficially. BAD PLAY: Sam Houston slipped one in on the Rebels with a 75-yard double-pass on the first play from scrimmage. Quarterback Dustin Duhon passed a lateral to Jacob Stracener who fired to a wide open Stanley Rochester III for a 7-0 lead with 11:42 to play in the first quarter. The Broncos would later take a 14-0 lead on a Duhon 12-yard scamper up the middle. IT WAS OVER WHEN: West Monroe linebacker Regan Murray intercepted a pass by Duhon with 5:35 to play. Bolden scored two plays later on a 17-yard touchdown run and 42-21 lead for the Rebels. The Broncos (6-5) had pulled to within 28-21 on a fourth and goal touchdown pass from the four from Duhon to tight end Daniel Lejeune with 10:15 remaining. SOMETHING SPECIAL: West Monroe (9-2) special teams again played a big role in the game. Nick Sanders returned the second half kickoff deep into Broncos territory where Williams scored moments later. Less than seven minutes later, senior linebacker Dustin Mitchell blocked a Duhon punt that sophomore defensive back Sawyer Passman returned for a touchdown. UP NEXT: No. 9 West Monroe will travel to No. 25 Covington in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs. Covington upset No. 8 Carencro 34-0 on Friday.
