This weeks question, worth 1 free jump, answer by noon Friday: An all-cargo DC-7 departs with just the Captain and First Officer on board. The Captain had many years of experience but the FO was a new hire whose previous job was as a NASA Rocket Scientist. Shortly after departure an engine caught on fire. The Captain was flying and told the FO to deal with the emergency with the Engine Fire Checklist. The checklist that was accomplished by the FO read: 1. Throttle to idle. 2. Propeller to feather. 3. Fuel lever, close. 4. Fire Handle, pull. The DC-7 then promptly crashed and the Captain and Flight Engineer were killed while the FO survived. In the investigation that followed the FO stated that he was a “Rocket Scientist”, that he was able to carry out instructions to the letter, and he had followed the checklist properly.
