Western Australia -- Severe Weather Warning 1 -- UPDATE Severe Weather Warning for destructive winds for people in the Goldfields, South Coastal, South East Coastal, Great Southern and Central Wheat Belt forecast districts Issued at 6:37 am WST on Monday 23 September 2013. For people in parts of WA south of a line from Walpole to Northam to Southern Cross to Norseman to Israelite Bay. This includes people in, near, or between the following towns: York, Southern Cross, Narrogin, Katanning, Albany, and Esperance. The warning for people west of a line Perth to Northam to Walpole has been CANCELLED. Weather Situation A strong cold front near Esperance will weaken and move southeastwards into the Bight this morning. The cold front is likely to cause WIDESPREAD DANGEROUS WINDS in excess of 125 kilometres per hour that could result in SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE OR DESTRUCTION TO HOMES AND PROPERTY. Dangerous winds are likely this morning south of a line from Walpole to Northam to Southern Cross to Norseman to Israelite Bay. Conditions should ease by midday. HIGHER THAN NORMAL TIDES may cause FLOODING OF LOW-LYING COASTAL AREAS between Perth and Esperance. DANGEROUS SURF CONDITIONS are likely which could cause SIGNIFICANT BEACH EROSION. Wind gusts of 146 kilometres per hour have been reported from Cape Leeuwin at 10:58 pm. Wind gusts of 117 kilometres per hour have been reported from Cape Naturaliste at 12:00 am. Wind gusts of 111 kilometres per hour have been reported from Busselton Jetty at 12:30 am. Wind gusts of 102 kilometres per hour have been reported from Rottnest Island at 11:30 pm. This front is expected to produce dangerous weather that is only seen once every 3 to 4 years in the southwest of WA. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should: If outside find safe shelter away from trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams. Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows. Unplug electrical appliances and do not use land line telephones if there is lightning. If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water. Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen power lines and loose debris. Keep away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways. Be careful of fallen trees, damaged buildings and debris. Be carefull of fallen power lines. They are dangerous and should always be treated as live. Assess your home, car and property for damage. If damage has occurred take photos and contact your insurance company to organise permanent repairs. If your home or property has significant damage, like a badly damaged roof or flooding, call the SES on 132 500. The next warning will be issued by 9:30 am WST Monday.
