Westminster MPs fail to grasp our situation says Cllr Mike - TopicsExpress

Westminster MPs fail to grasp our situation says Cllr Mike Champion. I note the recent remarks made by Candy Atherton (Lab), Sarah Newton (Cons) and George Eustice (Cons) in the WMN regarding a Cornish Assembly. Not only have they failed to grasp the Democratic need for such an assembly, they have used untruths and scare tactics akin to their parties’ tactics in the recent Scottish Referendum. A few years ago both Sarah and George were quoted as saying a Cornish Assembly was dead, so to let them know, it will never be dead. They all say that an assembly is just another tier of politicians. NO. These politicians already exist, just that at present they live and work in London. The point is that Cornwall needs these to be in Cornwall. Local people with local knowledge and accountable to the people of Cornwall. This is what localism should be about. Next they say that any extra powers should be given to Cornwall Council. The criticism of Cornwall Council by your readers is extant, and there is little merit in giving any more powers to them. We all know that Cornwall Council have such little power when it comes to making decisions on our behalf. All Cornwall Council can do is rubber stamp Westminster policy. That is no longer acceptable. Lastly the arguments put forward that such an assembly would cost more is totally ridiculous. If one is logical about it you would see that an assembly would actually cost less. You just have to look at the wage of Westminster employees and the cost of property in London to see that moving it to Cornwall would save money. We, the people of Cornwall, need a Cornish Assembly to bring government closer to the people. That government made accountable to the people of Cornwall, and for them to make the decisions about Cornwall at a local level. No longer is it acceptable that faceless bureaucrats in Westminster who know nothing of our problems be allowed to make our decisions. All the false promises made by Westminster and yet Cornwall is still the poorest place in Britain, and poorer than many places in Eastern Europe. The jobs that would come from an assembly would help our economy, with that money being spent in our Economy, in our shops and businesses. Cornwall’s MPs are elected to do what is best for US, not Westminster, it’s about time they did their job. We the people of Cornwall do not want to be lumped with Plymouth, Devon or a South West region. We are Cornish, with a proud history and distinct identity, we want that and are morally allowed to have that. I call on all the people of Cornwall to support a Cornish Assembly for one reason, and that is because it is the right thing to do, period. by Cllr Mike Champion, Camborne.
