Weve been allowing Olivia many days of not taking her ADHD medication this summer. This is the first time EVER that we could have even remotely thought about doing this. She was unmanageable without it...and she will admit that herself. Lately, and as she is maturing at a seemingly exponential rate, weve been asking her if she wants to take it or not, each day. Invariably, if we are doing an activity that day, she will say shed better take it and if were just hanging around at home, shell decide not to take it. She recognizes herself that she is SO much more social and actually wants to participate in family activities without it. Without it, she does have outbursts and crazy behaviours...but she quickly recognizes it now...and tries really hard to re-adjust...and its on the right side of MANAGEABLE!!!! I say this to those of you who wouldnt even dare to think that this could be a possibility...because that was us...for the past 8 years... IT CAN HAPPEN!!!! I asked her today about taking her meds when she heads to the big amusement park with her friend and his family tomorrow: Me: So, do u think youll want to take your medication tomorrow when you go to the amusement park with Jimmy and his family (not his real name) Liv: (without hesitation) Oh ya, Ill need it. I dont want to misbehave. Me: Well, do u think that you might be able to recognize those times when you act out and stop yourself? Liv: No. I cant do that yet. I know I wont listen and I might misbehave and I really want to make a good impression. ( awwwwww) Me: Ok then. Its up to you. But realize this....you are doing a remarkable job at controlling your behaviour without it, you know. We couldnt have even given you the option before this year! Liv: I still need it. Me: Fair enough My kid...unbelievably awesome Happy Sunday, Folks
