Weve been racing against the weather, and as far as getting the main structure of this gazebo built, we (BARELY) won! This weekend we finished building the cupola inside the big barn. Then our son Zachary came over and helped lift it into place (it was heavy and awkward). After it was fastened down tightly, I added the shingles (Sunday afternoon was cold and miserable up there, though!). As the sun was setting on the long weekend, we installed the last of the glass windows and the wood trim around the bottom of the cupola. Now it is time for us to prepare for the Candlelit Christmas Dinners the next two weekends, so we wont have much time to work on the gazebo now until spring. It needs a weather vane, and counting all three layers of the roof, we still have 24 ridges of shingles to install. It will have to be warmer weather first so they will bend without cracking. Meanwhile, this winter, we plan to create eight stained glass windows for the cupola, and one big window for the decorative area above the entrance. We hope to get a chance to add wiring and electricity to it so we can light it up this winter. In the spring, we need to add a few more decorative braces for stability, and in the summer, we will either paint or stain it (ongoing discussion!). But for now, it is a great feeling to get the main structure in place before the most serious winter weather hits. Thanks for all your interest and comments...sharing the process of building this with all of you has been fun and helpful too!
