Weve got to find a way to lift the stigma of mental health issues and the secret shame of suicide survivors. Im fully aware there are people who dont agree with my speaking out when my son isnt even buried yet, when we havent had his memorial service yet. But if not now, when? Once my grief has ebbed ever so slightly and my voice is not as broken? Once my support system and the attention has thinned a little so I wont be accused of opportunism? No. Now. Now is the time to let governments across this country know that we have the same right to mental health resources as we do to every other aspect of health care. And that it is their constant financial maligning of those resources that add to the societal stigma of mental illness, resulting in the loss of lives like my son - OUR son.
