Weve gotten a bunch of inquires about what happened to the osprey - TopicsExpress

Weve gotten a bunch of inquires about what happened to the osprey from the Newsday photo and we are very pleased to say he has been successfully released. The video posted on September 29th was him!! These photos were from his rescue and this is his story....Sweetbriar got a call from a passerby in Llyod Harbor who saw this young bird trying to fly from its nest but he was being pulled back by something and was not able to leave. When we arrived we saw that the nest was too high and we needed help from someone with a really big ladder....the fire department. They came from the Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department and with our guidance they helped removed the bird from its nest. His leg and foot were badly injured. He had gotten tangled up in balloon string that was in the nest and it had embedded itself under his skin. We kept him for 2 weeks treating him and hoping his injuries would heal. Unfortunately, his toe needed to be amputated. Our friends at Best Friends Veterinary in Nesconset agreed to amputate and after a successful surgery he was good to go -we drove him to the south shore to give him a heads up towards his migration destination southbound. His story thankfully ended well, however it is a situation that is happening too often with balloon string and fishing line. Whether accidental or deliberate, balloon releases are a form of pollution that can easily be stopped if more people are made aware of the dangers they pose to wildlife. We ask everyone to help spread the word.
