Weve had quite a few inquiries to what the difference is between the highly venomous Eastern Brown and the totally harmless Keelback. The first picture is of an Eastern Brown and the second a Keelback. Although especially the Eastern Brown can vary in colour and size- here are some of both snakes trade marks: The venomous Rough Scaled snake is also easily mistaken with the Keelback, but so far we havent been called out for one within our areas. Eastern Browns vary in colour from light tan to almost black. The belly ranges from cream to orange with darker orange blotches. Juveniles often have a darker head and neck band. Some times they have dark cross-bands along their entire length. As they get older they will lose these. The eastern brown snake grows to an average length of 1.5m. More info can be found here: 1300catchit.au/identify-a-snake/eastern-brown-pseudonaja-textilis/ Keelbacks are generally olive brown in color with dark cross bands that are often described as stripes due to the appearance of flecks seen through the scales, and a cream colored belly that has a pink or orange tinge running along the edges. As the name suggests its body scales are keeled giving it ridges that run along the snake’s body. Not a large species (they grow up to 75cm), 1300catchit.au/identify-a-snake/keelback-snake-tropidonophis-mairii-freshwater-snake/ The best way to check if a snake is venomous or not is by checking the scales on its head or counting the scales round its mid body. A non-venomous snake has loreal scales between its nostril and eyes. Always safer to take a pic and send us and or call us out though!
