Weve just received an update on PH Zulu (aka The Horse With No Name) from the team out at the Police Stables and thought you would be interested. PH Zulu is progressing well, he is going through the process of desensitisation to help him cope with the rigors of police work. His confidence with people improves daily and is not far off commencing his first day patrols in the suburbs. We don’t rush our young horses and it has to be remembered that Zulu is young and his early years were in the bush. Each step, as with all police horses, is taken when the trainer believes the horse is ready. Not every horse is the same and like people they learn and grow confidence at their own pace, Zulu is no different. Claustrophobic spaces are the biggest concern for most horses, especially when working with people in close proximity. Officers from the mounted section assist in training and as you can see get in close and personal with Zulu. This is what our horses face each Friday and Saturday nights in Northbridge, mostly people wanting to pat and say hello, but sometimes in less friendly circumstances when dealing with anti-social individuals and groups. The trick is to get the horse to accept this as normal whatever the situation. Trust between the rider and the horse is critical and it is a two way street, so strong bonds do form between them.
