Weve never talked about the Western Auto Store, that was the (eastern) half of what we now know as the Kundinger and Kroll P&H building on E. Main Street. Mr. and Mrs. Duane Rochefort ran it during the years I was a kid. Sebewaings Western Auto Store was the place I bought my first real baseball glove (which I still have) plus bike tires, bike streamers and lights and horns, toys, sports equipment, BB guns and refill BBs, Lionel train stuff and so much more. I can still sense what it smelled like in there when you would walk in, with a great combination of bicycle rubber, leather and other hardware store smells. The Rocheforts lived upstairs from the store, and it seemed like they were always there. They obviously worked six days a week, and were only closed Sundays and holidays. Their son Dan Rochefort was always one of the older kids I looked up to, smart, polite, musical and just a nice guy. When I was 8 or so, that meant the older kid usually wasnt mean to you (:-) ). Anyway, that was a great store, and it was part of a great Sebewaing where we grew up. Do you remember seeing this sign on the building???
