Weve received some more inquiries as to how we test our water, and our response when contaminated water is discovered. Below is a Q&A to help answer those important questions: Q1: What is being done to make sure our service members and families are not drinking water contaminated with lead? A1: The safety, health, and welfare of all Sig’ Citizens is priority #1 for command leadership. To keep our entire communitys water safe, we regularly test the end-to-end water system to pinpoint deficiencies. The recent lead testing in which almost 400 installation locations were sampled is part of these ongoing efforts. Once high lead counts are identified, we further isolate the lead source to the distribution system, the fixtures, or both. Until we can correct all locations exceedances, bottled water is substituted. Q2: Where and when is bottled water used? A: Bottled water is distributed to our base community whenever an exceedance is discovered in our water system (faucets, drinking fountains, etc.), or when there is a reasonable threat that water may not be fit to drink. The bottom line is that NAS Sigonella will distribute bottled water when we feel there is a threat – even a minor one – to the effected population. Q3: What is being done to find the source of the lead contamination, and then remove it? A3: When discovered, we immediately employ our team of professionals to fix the issue. To find the source of high lead, we retest areas where an exceedance has been discovered. If the retest proves positive for an exceedance, we expeditiously replace piping or the fixture itself. All the while the source of the exceedance is secured until the problem is fixed. This happens all throughout the base to include areas where our civilians and tenant command members (Marines, USAF, USCG, etc.) work and live. Q4: Can the base be trusted to provide the community clean drinking water? A4: I certainly cant and would not try to demand anyone trust our team. At the same time, our team is fully committed to our community and ALWAYS puts the communitys safety, health and welfare first. We are proactive in committing to quality water and when our water is not up-to standards, we notify the community and correct deficiencies. Notifications are completed through all available local media and especially via our Facebook page to our 15,000 “fans.” NAS Sigonella leadership and our entire water team pledge to always be forthright and transparent about our local water production. We will make every effort to continue providing our community with the purest drinking water possible.
