We’d like to share a bit of old-time rock with you on this - TopicsExpress

We’d like to share a bit of old-time rock with you on this beautiful Friday, in Adelaide at least. The English band Deep Purple were formed in 1968. There have been numerous personnel changes over the years but the most famous and successful line-up consisted of Ian Gillan performing vocals, Jon Lord on organ, Roger Glover on bass, Ian Paice on drums and the mercurial Ritchie Blackmore on lead guitar. The band is regarded as being one of the pioneers of hard rock and heavy metal, along with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Fine company indeed! Hands up any guitarist out there who didn’t learn ‘Smoke on the Water’ as a beginner? However, choosing that famous song would be too easy! Legend has it that the band were travelling to a gig in Portsmouth in a tour bus, way back in 1972, when they were asked by a reporter how they wrote their songs. In response, Ritchie Blackmore picked up an acoustic guitar and played a riff, based solely on a ‘G’ chord, over and over. Ian Gillan improvised vocals over the top and ‘Highway Star’ was born. The band played the song at the Portsmouth gig that night! This version of ‘Highway Star’ was performed in Copenhagen in 1972. While the band performs excellently, including some stand-out solos, the same cannot be said for the camera person. He or she either had a great sense of humour or was seriously into substance abuse (or possibly was Roger Glover’s relative!) as the camera generally pans away from the musical highlights! ‘Highway Star’ is a favourite of our good friend Dave, he who hits the skins for excellent Adelaide band the Rock Doctors. We hope you enjoy it as much as Dave will. Have a great weekend. obrienwealthmanagement https://youtube/watch?v=7zKAS7XOWaQ&app=desktop
