We’re a step closer to pulling off that subterfuge. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have recently manipulated red blood cells to carry virtually any molecule your doctor might prescribe. The technique, a collaborative effort by biology professors Harvey Lodish and Hidde Ploegh, is new, but the idea of using red blood cells to deliver therapeutic compounds has, surprisingly, been around for decades.
