We’re changing the content of some GCSEs – recently, we set out what would be improved in English and maths and today we’re announcing changes to other subjects. Why have we done this? Current GCSEs are not giving students the best chance to succeed, and change is needed. We’re often asked why children are being awarded higher grades every year, and it’s commented on every summer when pupils receive their exam results. Kings College research found that over 30 years, the proportion of students achieving a C grade in maths at GCSE had increased from 22% to 58% with no significant increase in actual performance – something which can’t be allowed to continue.
