We’re happy to showcase a meaningful initiative by Dr Tan Lai Yong, NYC’s Youth Corps Advisory Committee member who runs ‘Hidden Communities’, a course in NUS that exposes undergraduates to fringe communities in Singapore. Dr Tan’s resolve to highlight the issues of the invisible individuals living amongst us was strengthened through his experiences living and working with impoverished villagers. Among his notable contributions - providing medical care to the villagers and bringing in many other Singapore doctors to do free surgery in the villages. Back home, he continues contributing to the community through volunteering at HealthServe, which runs subsidised clinics for needy Singaporeans and foreign workers. He’s also helped to organise a fully foreign worker- starred concert! Truly an inspiration!
