We’ve all heard about Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, but have you heard of Posttraumatic Growth? Posttraumatic Growth is a popular term in positive psychology, emphasizing that trauma can have a positive influence on the way we function. Of course no one wants to experience trauma, but most of us often do. The way we cope with trauma (or lack of coping) determines how long we will suffer its effects on us. One of the oldest examples of posttraumatic growth is the story of Joseph, found in Genesis. He chose to cope by keeping his faith in God, even though he faced the trauma of family abandonment and false accusations. When we experience trauma, we can’t understand or make sense of it, but given the right tools and coping techniques, our posttraumatic stress can be transformed into posttraumatic growth. If you’re dealing with trauma, reach out and seek the help you need to transform tragedy into triumph. For more information, see psychologytoday/blog/what-doesnt-kill-us/201402/posttraumatic-growth.
