“We’ve got a telephone, we’ve got a telephone!” This was - TopicsExpress

“We’ve got a telephone, we’ve got a telephone!” This was the thought that crossed my mind as I ran home from elementary school. I had been allowed to give our phone number to my friend Tony, and today was going to be the first day I got to talk on the phone! I made my way pass the fence, jumped on top of the porch, and right away I could smell my mom’s tortillas; what a delicious aroma mixed with a fresh pan of bean and eggs! Walking into the house I wasn’t sure which two of the events were more exciting: the phone or the tortillas! As I put my books down on the couch the phone started to ring; it had to be Tony, my first phone call! My mom, in her broken English, answered the phone, “Hello. Who do you want to talk to? efrain, there is no efrain here! I immediately responded, “That’s me mami, that’s my name in school, they say it in English.” “Ok, that’s in school mijo, here at home your name is EFRAIN”, she said in her beautiful Mexican voice. “What happened to your name?” Tony asked. “Nothing happened”, I said, “Mami was telling me something about how to say my name, it’s not important.” My first phone call was thirty seconds long, and I got a speech about my name. It was worth it; oh, and later on in life I found out it was very important. Mi madre was very proud of her Mexican heritage; she passed away from cancer 14 years ago. She always told me, Encuentra la fuerza en tu corazón para vivir una buena vida todos los días, mañana puede ser que tengas que volar para tu casa.” (Find the strength in your heart to live a good life every day, tomorrow you might just have to fly home.) youtube/watch?v=yuNl50hUrs0
