We’ve lost our way. We join gymnasiums to use machines that simulate lifting boxes or chopping wood, but never actually lift boxes or chop wood. We run on treadmills at a pre-determined pace because attempting to stay still on a moving platform whilst watching TV is preferable to running outside. When we’re forced to run outside, we isolate ourselves from our surroundings with the finest technology. We listen to music, record our pace and heartrate. We concern ourselves with time elapsed, calories expended and distance covered. In doing so, we are conveniently able to ignore our surroundings – it’s treadmill running without the expense of a monthly membership. We spend our days in boxes. House. Car. Office. Car. House. We no longer travel. We leave A and are delivered to B. We shop in hangers where Coke is cheaper than water and chocolate is cheaper than vegetables. We spend more time posting shit like this on Facebook rather than taking the time to visit old friends. We pay more attention to the state of our bank balance than to the state of our health. We take pictures rather than see. We send flowers more often to the dead than the living. And we wonder why we always feel so lonely. We’ve lost our way.
