Whale of a problem I AM quite amazed that the Fisheries Department and Department of Environment are more concerned with the sale of bones and harvesting of the whales teeth rather than the welfare of the people of Navutulevu in Serua. What they should have done in the first place was to go over to the village when The Fiji Times first published the picture. Now when the people are doing things to get rid of the carcass and getting a reward from the bones and teeth, the authorities start jumping up and down. The authorities should have gone there in the first place knowing the danger the carcass had on the environment and advised the people about the dangers and the laws that restrict the sale of such things. This is the typical bureaucracy that still exists in some of our government departments. I wonder if the people of Navutulevu know about the laws that surround this kind of thing. Now is the time to educate the people and not sit at the office and talk. Go out and meet the people. ALLEN LOCKINGTON. Nadi. Daylight saving TO those against daylight saving, please spare a thought for us women who enjoy a little exercise at the end of a working day. We can now walk, jog etc feeling safe and not worry about being bothered by those who use the cover of darkness to harass and annoy females. Daylight saving is only for a few months so let us feel safe for a few months. TANIA SHEPHERD Nasinu Mentally ill THIS letter is aimed for all. Mad today means angry or upset. Not mentally ill. Insane means incredibly stupid, not mentally ill. Stupid is not a word to describe people. One may be in a stupor after drinking too much, or having suffered a severe concussion but not described as stupid, only as being in a stupor. Mental breakdown is now known as depression, a mental health issue, a treatable illness, not a matter of stigma or social isolation. Consider the words we choose to use to describe our frame of mind. Those words also reflect and define what we are becoming. Its circular, in effect. NANDA SOLOGAR Red Deer, Canada. fijitimes/story.aspx?item=letters
