Whangarei has a strong line-up of young leaders if the Lions Young Ambassador Awards is anything to go by. The annual competition aims to endorse and encourage teenagers who go the extra mile to be involved in their schools and communities. This years competition had no shortage of youth filling the criteria with nine teenagers from Whangarei high schools taking part. Kamo High School aspiring actor Luke Baker, 17, took first place in the competition. He wins $1000 and a chance to represent the Whangarei zone in the upper North Island finals on October 13. Second place and $300 was won by Annemieke Hendriks from Pompallier Catholic College, with third place and $200 going to Jack Hamilton from Whangarei Boys High School. The judges praised all nine talented contestants for their outstanding performance during the rigorous selection process. The applicants were put forward by their schools and each was sponsored by a Lions Club in Whangarei district. They were first assessed on their CVs covering academic record, leadership qualities, community involvement and extra-curricular activities. Each teenager had to have an interview with a panel of judges including former Lions district youth chairman Lindsay Laing, district councillor and youth worker Kahu Sutherland and Whangarei Leader acting editor Denise Piper. The selection process finished with a formal event on Wednesday evening where the applicants had to give a speech in front of 80 Lions Club members, plus family and friends. This year the dinner was hosted by Onerahi Lions
