What CTV and CBC reporters and anchors DID NOT tell you yesterday as they enthusiastically cheered Obamas bold move on power plants and GHGs: he was copying what the Conservatives did in Canada -two years ago - and not going as far. Yes, really: Obama Administration Announces Power Plant Regulations Yesterday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency unveiled a proposal for a 30 per cent reduction in power plant emissions by 2030 over 2005 levels. · We are glad that the United States is now proposing to follow in our footsteps and take action in this sector. We did not wait until 2014 to take action. Canada already took steps to regulate this sector in 2012 – 2 years ago. · Our rules are tougher and come into effect sooner than those proposed today by the United States. · The proposed U.S. rules will achieve emissions reductions from power plants of 30 percent by 2030; Environment Canada forecasts our rules reducing emissions from the sector by about 50 percent by 2030. · Under our Governments rules, Canada is the first major coal user to ban construction of traditional coal-fired electricity generation units. And our greenhouse gas regulations cover both new and existing coal-fired plants. · Canada represents less than 2% of global carbon emissions. By comparison, the U.S. coal sector produces more greenhouse gas emissions than ALL of Canada. In fact, three-quarters of Canada’s electricity supply emit no greenhouse gases. · Thanks to our actions, carbon emissions will go down by close to 130 megatons from what they would have been under Liberals. This is the equivalent of shutting down 37 coal-fired electricity generation plants. · We are accomplishing this without the Liberal and NDP’s job-killing carbon tax, which would raise the price of everything.
