What Do You Have Underneath Your House? This Guy Found A Massive Underground City Sometimes during typical Canadian winter weather, I wish that I lived in an underground city. That way, I wouldnt have to face the polar vortex for 5 months out of the year. This is not feasible, so my next option is to move to Turkey (let me explain). In 1963, a man from Nevşehir Province in Turkey was expanding his home during a remodel. After knocking down a wall, he discovered a hidden room of sorts that led to a hallway. This hallway turned into several rooms with more connecting tunnels, and the man quickly realized the weight of what he had discovered: an underground city. The tunnels are reported to have been created in the 12th and 15th centuries BCE. They are known as the Derinkuyu, or the underground cities of Cappadocia. The tunnels are multi-purpose in that they could shelter people, their food, and belongings (which was important in the climate at this time), and also protect them from possible attack. The Derinkuyu is known for being the biggest and deepest underground city in the region. It is 85 metres deep and spans eleven floors, and is believed to fit from 3,000 to 50,000 people. The caves are a predecessor to the modern home, as they were equipped with comforts you would see today, such as carved couches in communal rooms. They also had things like wells for fresh drinking water, what appears to be a school and a church, and staircases to access the different levels. In terms of accessing the city from the outside, there are approximately 600 doors hidden amongst courtyards that allow access. You can actually access the city as a tourist, as it opened to visitors in the early 1970s. However, only less than half is available to the public due to maintenance and safety concerns.
