What Does Summer Mean for The Elderly? Tomorrow marks the beginning of an exciting season for all of us in the U. S. Summer is a season of sunshine, brightness, mood elevation, BBQ, and outdoor activities. Summer is the season of vacationing to those luxurious and beautiful holiday resorts, parents with younger planning activities to keep the kids busy, and the time to clean up the house. Summer is a time to catch with the summer readings for students, and hang out with friends. It is an exploratory season for hikers, and people who love and admire nature. The hustling and bubbling of getting freshman ready for college by their proud parents are all accomplished in the summer season. The elderly population love summer, just like everyone else. It is a season to sit out on the patio and enjoy looking at the jumping squirrels, going to recreational activities with friends, and also having grandkids visit. It is very exciting to see children visiting from out of town that you have not seen in a long time. My clients just love the summer season because it keeps them away from the doctor’s office, for those with respiratory problems. Summer for the elderly is a happy time because the depressive winter is gone. With summer also comes the heat wave, which on its own can be miserable. The steaming temperature in the triple digits that turns the air conditioner into hot air, and high cost of utility bill that rolls in at the end of summer can be worrisome. The elderlies are susceptible to heat wave leading to stroke, disorientation, fatigue, and irritability. Careful monitoring of your loved ones, neighbors, or any individual with severe physical disability is important for early detection of signs and symptoms of heat wave. HAPPY SUMMER!
