What God deserves and requires of us is to love Him in proportion to His loveliness. But we have no clue as to how lovely He truly is. In giving us Christ we begin to see a glimmer of this infinite love of the Father, Son and Spirit. And as God reveals more and more of His love for us in giving us Christ we fall more and more in love with Him. We are totally bankrupt in our ability to love God as He deserves to be loved. The only way we will ever love him appropriately is in response to His love for us first. As He reveals Himself to us and we see the vastness of His love for us personally it awakens our love for him in return. This is the only way we will ever love God truly or begin to love Him fully as He deserves. To say we could ever love God in proportion to His loveliness unaided is to not understand that we are creatures, created and sustained by God. (And not only creatures but rebellious creatures at that, who believe they can find life outside of God). We have the capacity to receive and reflect love (and a great capacity at that, greater then any other created being. We are after all created IN GOD’S image) but not the ability to generate love within ourselves alone. We are not the source of our love. We do not love God (or each other) under our own power. We love God in response to His love as He increasingly reveals His loveliness and the vastness of His beauty and majesty to us. As we fall in love with Him our trust in Him grows. As it grows our desire to obey Him grows.
