What I did on my summer vacation: I spent a week in Barcelona, - TopicsExpress

What I did on my summer vacation: I spent a week in Barcelona, visiting all sorts of amazing cafes, museums, Gaudi-designed buildings etc. But there was one absolutely mandatory stop on our trip: Plaza George Orwell in the old city of Barcelona, to verify whether this photo could be real. blogs.publico.es/strambotic/files/2014/07/cartel-orwell.jpg This question is partly a simple issue of fact, but the existential consequences are monumental. If this is real, then satire is truly dead, skewered from end to end by the icepick of life-imitating-art. So I am mildly pleased to report that for an absolute stone cold fact: This photo is fake. Mostly. Probably. There is a Plaza George Orwell, and Barcelona really does have Zonas Vigiladas, but Plaza George Orwell has been spared this indignity - or perhaps these images on social media have shamed them into removing the designation. Either way it seems that Plaza George Orwell is not quite that Orwellian. Which means that sarcasm, irony and satire, yet live. All hail, George Orwell - a better sort of pig.
