What I learned at LDS General Conference Saturday Afternoon Session: Theme: Dude, you gotta get off your butt, repent, and teach your kids the gospel. Its about to hit the fan and if youre not prepared, its not gonna be pretty. Dallin H Oaks Let me see if I can sum this up a little more succinctly than my last post: 1. Love one another. Its going to be really hard. Do it anyway. We are to live in the world but not be of the world. Because our function is to raise the whole mass as leaven. 2. The teachings about contentions is essential: There shall be no disputations among you as there have hitherto been. He that hath the spirit of contention is not of me, but of the Devil…. 3. Wise men turn away wrath. Follow after the things that make for peace. 4. As we seek meekness, and humility we must not surrender our values. There is no middle ground between truth and error. Loving kindness is required, but be firm in the truth. 5. Teach the truth and the commandments plainly in our homes and places of worship. In public consider, we should follow the teachings to love our neighbor. We should be examples. Our stands on controversial topics should not be contentious. We ask that others not be offended by our free exercise of religion as we respect their right to practice their own beliefs. 6. Do not show disrespect for those who are different. All youth should avoid practices that inflict harm on another. 7. All should banish hateful communications and practice civility in communication especially in politics. 8. Kindness is powerful, especially in a family setting. Neil L. Andersen 1. The good speaking of Joseph Smith came gradually. The evil, speaking came immediately. The apostle Paul was called mad/deranged The Savior was called a winebibber, gluttonous. Opposition to the things of God sends seekers of truth to their knees for answers. 2. Joseph’s work requires more than intellectual consideration. Spiritual questions require spiritual answers, from god. 3. Studying the church through the eyes of its defectors is like trying to understand Jesus through the eyes of Judas. 4. Offer kindness to those who criticize Joseph Smith. Take comfort that all of this was foretold long ago by Moroni. 5. Internet information does not have a truth filter. By their fruits ye shall know them. 6. Each believer needs their own witness of the divine nature of the mission of the Prophet Joseph Smith. You won’t be much help to others if your own faith is not firmly in place. The negative commentary of Joseph Smith will increase, not diminish. People will need your help. Now is the time to adjust your own spiritual O2 mask so you can help others. 7. The Youth have been challenged: Gain a personal testimony of Joseph Smith. -Find scriptures in BoM that you know are true. -Share -Read the testimony of Joseph Smith of what occurred . Read it often. -Record the testimony of Joseph Smith in your own voice and share it with friends. 8. No force in the entire world can stop the work of God. Despite what comes, this great cause will go forward. 9. Jesus Christ chose Joseph Smith. He was an honest man. God the father and Jesus Christ did appear to him. Tad R. Callister 1. Mothers are key. Magnify your calling as a parent. We are to be the primary gospel teachers of our children. We can teach them the power and reality of the Atonement and give them a rock solid foundation upon which to build. The home is the ideal form to teach the gospel of Jesus Christ. 2. Teach your children the POWER of prayer not just the routine of prayer. 3. Mothers: get you butts back into the home and teach your children. If we do not do this, who will? Do our children receive the leftovers after we have finished church callings, FBing, school, work, etc etc? God never gives us a responsibility without offering divine aid. (NOTE: He may not have used these exact words....) Jörg Klebingat, 1. What thoughts come to you mind if you had a personal interview with your Savior right now? Would you rejoice? 2. Practices that will dissipate the evil voices that chip away at your soul: -Take responsibility for your own spiritual well being. Don’t blame others or your circumstances. -Take responsibility for your own physical wellbeing. Feeding the soul while neglecting the body leads to dissonance. Your body deserves exercise. -Embrace wholehearted obedience as part of your life. You cannot love God without also loving his commandments. Choosing something bad over something worse doesn’t cut it. -Become good at repenting thoroughly and quickly. It should be applied 24/7 as you establish an attitude of joyful repentance. -Become good at forgiving. Don’t be easily offended. You are not exempt from this commandment -Accept trials as part of your mortal existence. You are here to be tested. You are not exempt. Force a smile and say, “I understand lord, this is a time to prove myself.” 3. Yours is the privilege to know that you are pleasing God despite your shortcomings. Eduardo Gavarret 1. John 10: 1-5 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers. Make sure you are following the right voice. 2. By keeping the commandments you are saying yes Lord I will follow thee. Accept his invitation to follow him. 3. Have no more disposition to do evil but to do good continually. Jeffrey R Holland 1. Jesus’ first messianic duty was to bless the poor and the poor in of spirit. What can one man or woman do? She who hath done what she could is a succinct formula. 2. Reporter to Mother Theresa: Statistically speaking you are accomplishing nothing. She replied, my work is about love not statistics. What we do is a drop in the ocean but if we didn’t do it, the ocean would be one drop less. 3. Cease withholding your means because we see the poor as having brought the misery on themselves. 4. Are we not all beggars? Don’t we all beg for forgiveness for mistakes we’ve made? 5. We obtain a remission of our sins by pleading to the Lord. We retain a remission of our sins by compassionately responding to the poor who plead to us. 6. After you have prayed if you turn away the needy and the naked and not impart of your substance to those in need I say unto you your prayer is in vain and your as hypocrites that deny the faith. 7. We are always expected to help ourselves before we seek help from others. God will guide you in compassionate discipleship if you are conscientiously looking, praying for how to fulfill a commandment. 8. All who are physically able are to observe the law of the fast. Cherish that sacred privilege at least monthly and be as generous as circumstances permit with your fast offering. God will be generous to you. And those who find relief at your hand will call your name blessed forever. L Tom Perry 1. How we learn to adjust to the changes that come along depends on our foundations. 2. Fix our eyes on him. Knowing that He truly is the savior and redeemer of the world. 3. The tares of the world are so widespread there is no way to weed them out. How blessed are we to have the precious gospel of our Lord and Savior to build the foundation of our lives. 4. We must never let the noise of the world overpower that still small voice. Our challenge will be on how we prepare for these events. We have the responsibility to preserve and protect the family as the basic unit of the gospel. As the world continues to watch us, let us be certain that we will exemplify the Lords plan. 5. Women who make the house a home make a far greater contribution to society than those who stand at the head of corporations. 6. The decisions made by this generation of parents have eternal consequences. There has been no more serious challenge than to do all they can to strengthen the home. 7. There has never so much been a time when there is more of a need for parents to rear their children with faith and courage. We must find within ourselves that same determination with that same spirit of sacrifice. We must instill an ever stronger reliance on the teaching of the savior. Helaman 5:12 And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall. Nope, couldnt make it more succinct. It is what it is. :) #LDSConf #ShareGoodness
