What I learned at LDS General Conference Sunday Morning session: Themes: Repent, Personal Revelation, Prophets, Revelation continues Henry B Eyring 1. We need revelation from God. A constantly renewed stream, not just one flash of comfort, but continuing communication with God. 2. The revelation of a parent has a lasting affect in the personal revelation of a child. 3. Continuing revelation will expand a leaders capacity beyond his or her own ability to rise above the challenges before them. 4. Don’t take lightly the feeling of love you have for the prophet of God. It is a gift from God. 5. She knew for herself, repeated over and over. She knew for herself. Seems it’s important that we know for ourselves. Revelation continues in the church; the prophet for the church, the stake president for the stake, the bishop for his ward, the father for his family, the individual for himself. Russell M Nelson 1. How do we really sustain a prophet? 2. It is an important duty resting on the saints who sustain the prophets of the church. 3. If President Kimball hadn’t undergone that surgery, Its likely that I would not have been a member of this church. 4. A prophet has stood at the head of Gods church in all dispensations from Adam till today. They testify of Jesus Christ and we honor Joseph Smith and each man that has succeded him in the church. 5. When we sustain our leaders we invoke the law of Common Consent. This gives us confidence and faith as we strive to keep the scriptural injunction to follow his voice. 6. No prophet has ever been elected or chosen of himself. No leader has been chosen. You and I do not vote. The ways of the lord are different from mans. Mans ways remove people from office when they become old or disabled. Our sustaining is an oathlike indication that we recongize their calling as a prophet to be legitimate and binding on us. 7. The obligation we make when we raise our hands is a most sacred one. It means we will stand behind the prophet. We will pray for him. We will defend his good name and strive to carry out his directions to the best of our abilities. 8. The calling of these 15 men provides great protection for us in the church. Why? Because decisions must be unanimous. Carol F McConkie 1. Propehts are messengers of righteousness. 2. Revelation continues. We have access to prophets. Sustain them. We also have access to personal revelation. 3. Prophets do all things in the name of Jesus Christ. It has been said, weather by my own voice or the voice of my servants it is the same. We need never be deceived about answers to our questions or which voice to follow. God reveals his word through his chosen servants, till we all come to a unity of the faith. 4. In a world threatened by a famine of righteousness we are given an opportunity to submint to the will and wisdom of the prophet of the lord. 5. Following the prophet may be unpopular but it is always right. The words of the prophets are like manna to our souls. 6. When we follow their words we learn how to come unto Christ and live. #nopressurePresidentMonson. Robert D. Hales Love = obedience For this is eternal: that they might know the only God and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent. This knowledge comes through personal revelation. Your testimony will grow as you learn about Heavenly Father from teachers, parents, scriptures study and as you obey the commandment. The Holy Ghost testifies that these things are true. Seeking personal revelation is key. The Father and Son have a perfect love and unity. The pattern of the scriptures testifies of the father and the son as separate individuals and being. They are one being, equally dedicated in bringing to pass the eternal life of man. As a you seek a personal witness you’ll discover that He has provided a special way for you to know the truth through the Holy Ghost. Moroni 10:4 – 5 4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. 5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things. Heavenly Father wants us to seek this knowledge. Helaman 5:12 12 And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall. Our sure foundation is Jesus Christ, the rock of heaven. James J. Hamula 1. Participation in sacrament signifies to all a wholehearted willingness to follow Jesus and keep his Commandments. Spiritual death will pass over and eternal life is assured. 2. Significantly Jesus also instituted the sacrament unto those in the Americas. 3. The ordinance of the sacrament has been called one of the most holy and sacred in the church. Jesus himself instituted it to remind us of what He did for us and to teach us of redemption, that we may live with him again. 4. Bread first = reminded of own personal resurrection. All of us will be restored to the presence of God. The fundamental question is with whom will we live after we die? While everyone will return, not everyone will remain with God. We will be unclean. Water = how we can be made clean and stand in the presence of God. Jesus satisfied the demands of justice, and if we have faith in Him and repent, we receive a remission of sins and are cleansed and purified. 5. Repent all ye ends of the earth and come unto me that ye may be sanctified… that ye may stand spotless before me. 6. We submit ourselves to Him. We take His name upon us. The most important event in all of eternity is the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Regular and earnest partaking of the sacrament helps us embrace and live and faithfully and endure to the end. Thomas S. Monson Our primary purpose is to gain a body and experience that can only come through separation from our heavenly parents. To be tested. We brought a great gift from God, our agency. We are privileged to choose for ourselves. We differentiate the bitter and the sweet. Decisions determine destiny. He has given us the tools we need as we strive to do all in our power to endure till the end. We have the words of God and his Son in the scriptures. We have the gospel and teachings of the prophets and a perfect example to follow in Jesus Christ. What manner of man ought ye to be? Verily I say unto you, even as I am. As we look to Jesus and follow in his footsteps, we can return safely to live with our Father in Heaven. Unless a man shall endure to the end in following the example of God he can not be saved. Walking where Jesus walked is less important than walking AS he walked. All of us can walk the path he walked with His spirit filling our hearts and His teachings guiding our lives. His example lights the way. We will see that following His path brings us through many of the challenges we face. Each of us will walk the path of disappointment and the path of temptation too. But and it must needs be that the devil must tempt man or they will not be agents unto themselves. While we will find on our path bitter sorrow, we will also find eternal happiness. Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice. Let us remember that the end result of disobedience is captivity and death, and the reward for obedience is liberty and eternal life. Instructions given by the Savior are at our fingertips: Be merciful, be peacemakers, pure in heart, stand up bravely for our beliefs even when persecuted, let your light shine so that others may desire to glorify in their Father in Heaven. He teaches us to love and serve our neighbors and to improve ourselves, to go to the rescue of those who have left the path and lost their way. As we strive to make Christ the center of our lives He has promised to share with us eternal life that He died for us to obtain. Noting else, no other choice we can make, can make us into what he can. We too can have a pure spirit of peace and goodness and share it with the world as we walk the Saviors path of discipleship. The Savior’s example provides a framework for everything we do. His path will take us safely home. #ShareGoodness #LDSConf
