What I was reminded of today: We stand on too many shoulders to ever fall off. Its crazy how some things we think about constantly and others pass into our subconscious for years. Tonight, I realized it had been at least 2.5 years since I had been inside a movie theater. Chieko and I went to see ‘Lee Daniels’ The Butler.’ I highly recommend it. Loosely based on the life of a White House Butler, the film encapsulates the brunt of the American Civil Rights movement in roughly 2.25 hours. Bringing with it a staggering array of big name actors. Lest you question it’s appeal to anyone under 60 or not African American, the film is not about one man’s struggles or accomplishments as it is about everyone’s. We all benefit from the lessons learned by our elders. Not only are we, in this very moment, a composite of all of our past decisions, but we picked up at a point where our elders brought us to. In other words, we have the power to be whoever we chose in the moment, but unless we consciously override all of our personal history, that choice is informed by not only who we were, but who our elders were and who their elders were. I have told the story a few times, but a few years back, my Sister Yejide invited me to the release party for one of her CDs. A party where she was joined on stage by many of the artists who contributed to the CD. Omega Moon came up to perform a track or two and addressed the crowd thanking each and every one of us. She continued that she learned something from each of us, whether she realized what it was or not. Give thanks, beloved. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Butler
