What Is It? And in the morning there was a layer of dew around - TopicsExpress

What Is It? And in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost on the ground appeared on the desert floor. When the Israelites saw it they said, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. Exodus 16:13b-15 Sometimes we don’t recognize God’s blessings for what they are. After they had been wandering in the wilderness for some time, the Israelites began to grumble about not having enough to eat. God spoke to Moses and told him His plans for feeding the people with “bread from heaven.” Moses shared this great news with the people along with instructions on how they were to gather it. They should’ve been expecting it, but when the blessing of God came the people didn’t recognize it for what it was. Moses had to tell them that it was God’s bread from heaven. But, it was too late. They’d already named it: “What is it?” That’s the literal translation of the Hebrew word, manna – “What is it?” How ironic that the word manna has come to be symbolic of God’s daily provision, when the word itself indicates the recipients of this blessing from God missed it for what it was! And, how typical this is of our understanding of God’s blessings. We have ideas in our minds of what it will be like when God pours out His blessings on us. But when they come and don’t look like what we’re expecting, we find ourselves scratching our heads wondering if His gifts will ever be delivered. Praise the Lord for His patience with us! God often does the unexpected or blesses us in ways that we’d least expect. Each of us could probably tell at least one story of how we were blindsided by something, which at first, we’d have sworn was anything but a blessing from God. But, later, when the smoke cleared, we saw how His hand had been at work. The next time you experience the unknown – one of those “head scratching” moments – leave open the possibility that it is a new blessing from God, the likes of which you’ve never seen before.
