What Is Yoga? The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root ruj (unite) and is related to the English word yoke. Yoga is the union of body, mind and spirit. Sanskrit is an Indo-Aryan language, the primary language of Hinduism, a literary language in Buddhism and Jainism and one of the worlds oldest classical languages dating back over 3,000 years. Sanskrit was developed with a spiritual purpose as its primary objective. It is a language with a vibratory structure that has been constructed for the deepest levels of consciousness. Its use in yoga and meditation is believed to penetrate our mind to access levels of higher consciousness. The following is a brief description of some of the more common styles of yoga available. It is by no means an exhaustive explanation of each style, its beliefs or foundations.
