What???? J. R. R. Tolkien (1892–1973): an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor, spoke more than twelve languages and dialects, and also invented several languages. Tolkien learned Latin, French, and German from his mother, and learned Middle English, Old English, Finnish, Gothic, Greek, Italian, Old Norse, Spanish, Welsh, and Medieval Welsh while at school.[citation needed] He was also familiar with Danish, Dutch, Lombardic, Norwegian, Russian, Serbian, Swedish, and older forms of modern Germanic and Slavonic languages.[
