What Kind of Bird is This? Doug spotted this bird this morning - TopicsExpress

What Kind of Bird is This? Doug spotted this bird this morning and when I looked through his scope my first impression was that it was an immature eagle. Doug didnt think so and the only other thing that I could think of was a red tail. At the time the bird was in a dead tree all by itself and did not have 4 or 5 eagles sitting with it. Another person, A friend of mine who photographs in the park often, that I have been trying to help with wildlife sightings and information (in other words be nice and supportive), looked into the scope and claimed the bird was an immature osprey. Seeing as how ospreys have been gone since October and that I have never seen one with this coloring - well, both Doug and I told her that we were pretty sure it was not an osprey. Unfortunately, this information seemed to make her pretty pissed off at me - not Doug of course - and she went storming off. So, since I appear to be bird and parking deficient, thought it best, and fair to all concerned, to check out the ID with some bird experts. This bird was larger than the balds sitting in the tree and I have seen many immatures in different stages but the coloring seems a bit off. Even if it has the beak and size of an eagle. (Hope I am not sounding too bird ignorant here - several people were trying to decide on the ID, with eagle being the most popular. Not sure I have ever seen an immature golden. But, then, when the bird flew to the eagle infested tree, there were no complaints whatsoever. So, please help!
