What Lies Below: Antartica mountains hidden under 40,000 years of snow. This radar image of the Antartic ice and snow was collected back in 1998, using an instrument aboard an airoplane which transmits microwave signals and records the magnitude of the echoes returned to the instrument. The area surveyed by the study goes from the Ross Ice Shelf, southward over the Transantarctic mountains between the Scott and Reedy Glaciers, and over the South Pole. It took two days to aquire the image collected in this NASA post. The image has recently been used by scientist to choose the location of a new drill hole which aims to penetrate deep into the Antartic ice to study over 40,000 years of climate and environment change in the region.
